Over 100,000 tourists expected in Buenos Aires this long weekend

Highlight activities include a federal asado championship on 9 de Julio

Cold weather is not the only thing coming to Buenos Aires: more than 106,000 domestic and international tourists are expected to visit Argentina’s capital for this four-day weekend, according to the city’s Tourism Agency.

Monday and Tuesday will be public holidays for the anniversaries of the deaths of two Argentine national heroes: General Manuel Belgrano —a politician and intellectual who is credited with creating the national flag— and General Martín Güemes, a military leader in the country’s struggle for independence.

Some of the special tourist events scheduled for this weekend include the Federal Asado Championship, focused on Argentina’s most emblematic gastronomic tradition. The event will take place on Monday 19 from 10 am to 6 pm on Avenida 9 de Julio, between Corrientes and Avenida de Mayo. The championship will declare the best parrillero (grill master) of the country. Sixty food stands will showcase steakhouses and there will also be fairs dedicated to special Argentine dishes and a stage for cultural activities.

Another highlight will take place on Saturday 17, from noon to 6 p.m: the Feria Patria (Homeland Fair) on Avenida de Mayo, between Chacabuco and Bolívar, with free admission. The event will feature 32 stands selling typical local foods, 28 stands with regional products, and a stage for bands that will play and dance Argentine folk music.

The full schedule of cultural activities for the long-weekend can be found in the Vivamos Cultura website.

This is the fifth consecutive long weekend that the number of tourists coming to the city will surpass the 100,000 mark. According to data from the City’s Tourism Observatory, hotel occupancy is estimated at 72% and business activity during the weekend will result in a financial benefit of AR$8 billion for the City.

“Each long weekend is a new opportunity for us to show the large number of activities the City has,” said Lucas Delfino, president of Buenos Aires city’s tourism board. “We are constantly working to develop a tourist offering for all tastes and budgets and continue positioning ourselves as a favorite destination for visitors looking for a weekend getaway. Over the long weekends of 2023, we’ve welcomed around 650,000 national and international visitors, and that’s a sign we’re on the right track.”
