Get Out! Japanese food and indie rock — it’s gonna be a good weekend

From onigiri to electronic music to free museums, we’ve got all the makings to keep you busy Friday through Sunday

It’s a good weekend to be in Buenos Aires — granted it’s always a good weekend to be in Buenos Aires — but this one particularly so. From the Japanese food fest to Winona Riders, you’re gonna want to be in two places at once. Don’t blame us, we’re just the messengers.

So here’s your recommendations to let loose a little.

Gastro Japo Food Week

Wednesday 2 through Tuesday 8
Various locations across the country

More than 40 restaurants across Argentina are participating in the 6th “Gochisōsama,” or more easily pronounced as Gastro Japo Food Week. The event, supported by the Embassy of Japan, features special menus and pricing at select locations.

This year, the event highlights the onigiri which will be featured in a variety of versions on the special menus. Onigiri is a symbol of Japanese cuisine: a simple but delicious rice ball, traditionally filled with ingredients such as salmon, pickled plum or a simple sheet of nori seaweed.

Participating restaurants range from sushi and ramen places to pastry shops and fusion cuisine. A full list of venues is available online, as well as promotions and giveaways.

Free Winona Riders Concert

Saturday 5 — 7 p.m.
Centenario Park Amphitheater (Leopoldo Marechal and Av. Lillo)

One of the boldest, fastest-rising rock bands in the indie scene, Winona Riders will play a free gig at the Parque Centenario Amphitheater on Saturday. Featuring emerging band Desvío as the opening act, Winona Riders’ one-hour concert will officially kick off Sonido Inminente, a two-day music event organized by Estudio Urbano and Música BA.

Entry is a first-come first-served basis until capacity is reached. The show will last one hour.

Mutek AR

Wednesday 2 through Sunday 6
Various venues across the city
Tickets can be purchased online

This international festival of digital creativity and electronic music is an Artlab production. It’s the sixth edition of the festival in Buenos Aires and it’s both larger than past years, and lasts an extra day. This year, MUTEK.AR will focus on new technologies, including the paradigm-changing influence of AI in the development of digital creation.

Events include immersive art, technology, live shows and music, happening in venues like Planetario Galileo Galilei, Teatro Alvear, and Casa Futuro.

Museum Day

Sunday 6 — 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Free entry to Buenos Aires Government Museums

MuseosBA celebrates its annual day of open museums with free admission on Sunday and new exhibitions throughout the month. Many museums have already inaugurated new exhibitions, and will continue to have them on show.

Museums opening its doors include the Larreta, Fernández Blanco (Palacio Noel and Casa Fernández Blanco), Saavedra, Perlotti, as well as the Popular Art Museum, the Carlos Gardel House, the Museum of the City, and the Pablo Ducrós Hicken Film Museum.
