Get Out! Horror films, an opulent banquet, British music, and… a chess tournament

This weekend offers a wide spread of events all across the board, from an Indie festival to midnight showings of terror films. Whatever you’re into, it’s probably happening in BA

From Colapinto taking years off our life with the tension, to sweltering through the humidity of a thousand tropical jungles, it’s a wonder we even made it to the weekend.

Don’t ask me how, but we’re finally here, and whether you’re more the gaudy type or the intellectual, we’ve got something for you. So here’s our recommendations to take a few deep breaths and forget about the responsibilities.

Festival Hyperlocal

Saturday 30 — 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Teatro Verdi and El Maquinal
Tickets start at ARS$20,000

New York

This international music and art festival connects Buenos Aires with London in a nonstop line-up of 15 international and local artists performing in a span of 12 hours. The event’s headliner is Mica Levi, a Cannes winner and Oscar nominated artist from London who has composed music for several well-known films.

The festival, which prides itself on being a DIY affair and challenging the limitations of distance and resources,  is split into two parts. The first half is from 6 p.m. to midnight at Teatro Verdi in La Boca, and the party continues from midnight to 6 a.m. at El Maquinal in the Abasto area. You can purchase individual tickets for just the first or second parts of the festival, or a joint ticket as well.

Rojo Sangre Horror Film Festival

Thursday 28 to Sunday December 8
Multiplex Belgrano (Vuelta de Obligado 2238)
Tickets are ARS $2700 per screening

Desde adentro

It’s the 25th anniversary of this iconic Buenos Aires film festival for lovers of horror, fantasy, and bizarre cinema. The 10-day celebration includes more than 60 feature films, nearly half of which are Argentine.

A number of the screenings will be national and international premiers, and late night showings are back by popular demand — with some films starting at midnight and 12:30 a.m. A complete program is available online, where you can see all of the competitions, categories, and film selections. You can catch some short films from past festival editions online as well.

The festival includes a number of free activities at the Escuela de Cine Eliseo Subiela (Iberá 2409) such as a series of talks, a panel, and masterclasses. The festivities will close with a free celebration on Saturday December 7 at 11 p.m. at the Centro Cultural El Limonero (Salguero 668). Expect DJs, a comedy live drawing show, a console and gaming station, and probably a fair amount of jump scares.

Opulent Victorian Banquet

Sunday 1 — 7:30 p.m.
Lardito (Av. Jorge Newbery 3655)
Tickets are ARS $62000

Step into a decadent Victorian banquet with this four-course feast guided by a master of ceremonies and three sommeliers. The evening takes on a magical twist, blending the four elements with delights, elixirs and incantations.

You can expect the celestial night to be filled with rituals and alchemists, and only about a thousand made-for-Instagram moments. The event is held at and catered by Lardito, a wine bar in Chacarita with fierce cool kid vibes.

While the dinner is on the pricier side, we’re including it because it’s hosted by Hay Plan — a production company that always throws parties worth attending. They focus on planning the types of outings they would want to go to, and are known for creating individual worlds out of each gathering. Tickets go fast, so if you have your eye on the night, don’t wait to purchase entry.

99th Argentine Major Chess Championship

Tuesday 26 to Friday December 6
Three locations across the city

While we wouldn’t typically include a chess championship in our idea of banging weekend plans, we’re making an exception for this one. Eleven-year-old Argentine chess prodigy Faustino Oro will make his debut at this prestigious competition, which crowns the top Argentine player. Oro is the youngest contestant to ever compete in the tournament.

The competition is played in 11 round robin games, from November 26 to December 6. On weekdays, games are set to start at 2:30 p.m. at the Casa de la Ciudad Auditorium (Uspallata 3150, Parque Patricios). Saturday’s games will start at 4 p.m. and will be played at the Club Argentino de Ajedrez (Paraguay 1858, Recoleta),  Sunday action — also at 4 — will move to the Círculo de Ajedrez Torre Blanca (Sánchez de Bustamante 587, Almagro).
