Get Out! Chinese New Year, choripán, and DJs by the river

The city is starting to come back to life, and so are its goings-on: here are our top picks to carry you through the weekend

And just like that, it’s the weekend again — here are your Buenos Aires recommendations to make it last as long as possible. Whether we manage it by feasting on chori or celebrating the year of the Wood Snake, we’ve got plans to coax us away from staying indoors hugging our ventilator for some reprieve. We’re not letting the heat best us — although that said, stay hydrated and make sure to protect yourself from the sun!

Lunar New Year Celebrations

Saturday, January 25 — Barrio Chino

Sunday, January 26 — Plaza Parque Nacionales Argentinos

Free entry

The year of the Wood Snake starts on January 29, but events all over Buenos Aires kick off this weekend to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

The Great Chinatown Party in Barrio Chino is on Saturday, as well as the nearby shopping center ViaViva. It’s a full day of events, including dragon dances, martial arts exhibitions, live music, DJs, and a festive atmosphere with roving performers. On Sunday, you’ll find celebrations and cultural activities in Plaza Parque Nacionales Argentinos, about ten minutes from Barrio Chino.

Then, on January 28, three decorated buses will leave Barrio Chino at 6 p.m. to give a tour around the city. This will be followed at 8:30 p.m. by the illumination of iconic monuments such as el Puente de la Mujer, the Monumental Tower of Retiro, and the Planetarium. The lights will be red, symbolizing brotherhood and good fortune.

There will be still more Chinatown celebrations on February 1 and 2. On February 7, there will be guided tours and cultural activities at The National Museum of Oriental Art and the Borges Cultural Center.

Chori Fest

Friday, January 24 to Saturday, January 25 — 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Palermo Hippodrome (Av. Del Libertador and Dorrego, CABA)

Free Entry

Of course, the iconic Argentine asado staple, the choripán, gets its own Chori Fest. This year is the ninth, kicking off the 2025 season of food fairs at the Palermo Hippodrome with 35 stalls and food trucks offering all types of choripán, from traditional to weird to flat-out controversial.

Think lamb chorizo with red onion, yogurt, cucumber, mint, and sweet potato. Vegetarian chorizo with eggplant, spinach, goat cheese, and honey. Or smoked choripán with mushrooms, lettuce, orange, and garlic. Vegan and gluten-free options will be on offer as well.

And in case you’re with someone who doesn’t like chori (there’s always one), there will be sweetbreads, flank steak, short ribs, pork belly, tenderloin, ribs, and empanadas. All things you can wash down with wine and craft beer.

Summer in the City

Saturday, January 25 — 4:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Sunday, January 26 — 4:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Saint Tropez Park (Costanera Norte)

Free entry

Summer in the City mixes sunsets, gastronomy, and music next to the river. So dance the night away next to the water, if you squint and tilt your head a little, you can pretend like you’ve run off to the coast like almost everyone else in January.

This city-hosted event features DJ Fer Palacio at 8 p.m. on Saturday and Axel Caram on Sunday. DJs Francois and Matías Berstein will also make an appearance. There will be games set up for playing with friends. Eleven food trucks will be parked along the river, offering everything from smoked and grilled meats to ice cream and pizzas.

If you can’t make it this weekend, the city will be hosting another “Summer in the City” event in February, so keep your eyes peeled for that one as well.
