It’s the weekend, yet again. And, as usual, the Herald is here with some Buenos Aires recommendations to make your weekend that much better.
Alberto Fernández did an excellent job of making sure that nobody had any free time this week. But, in happier newsroom news, a few of us managed to snag press passes for the alfajor festival at La Rural, because coverage will definitely take a minimum of at least three reporters.
So here’s our picks to get you out of the house this weekend.
Wednesday 14 through Tuesday 27
Various venues around the city
It’s that time of year again — when dancers in long glittery dresses and three-piece suits stage a two-week takeover of Buenos Aires for the annual Tango Festival and Competition. The event happens across a variety of venues throughout the city including Usina del Arte, Teatro Colón, Centro Cultural 25 de Mayo, and Centro Cultural Recoleta.
The festival features orchestras and ensembles, dance performances, classes, milongas, films, exhibits, book presentations, a product fair, and more. The Mundial is a global tango dance competition with both professionals and amateurs.
Campeonato Mundial del Alfajor
Friday 16 through Sunday 18 — Noon to 9 p.m.
La Rural, Pavilion 8 (Sarmiento 2704)
Tickets are AR$3.000 and can be purchased online. Free for retirees and kids under 12
If you feel like putting your self control to the test this weekend, have a wander through the world alfajor championships.
The event features more than 90 stands including international vendors, tastings and awards, talks and masterclasses, presentations, and a section specifically for children’s pastries, because in case you forgot, Sunday is Children’s Day.
And just to emphasize that we definitely haven’t forgotten and my editor definitely didn’t have to remind me, we found a couple of kids’ events that are actually pretty cool. So cool that I’m debating how weird it makes me if I go without a child.
Kids Concert in the Planetarium
Sunday 18 — 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Planetario Galileo Galilei, Av. Sarmiento s/n
Free entry, reservations must be made ahead of time. Reservations will open at 1 p.m. Saturday 17
To celebrate Children’s Day, there will be two free performances of Recetario de Sueños en Concierto, a musical performance from members of the city’s children and youth orchestras. The show will be held in the Nocturno concert hall under the planetarium’s starry dome.
The show includes visuals and illustrations by award-winning graphic artist Isol Misenta, and original music from composer Pedro Onetto.
Saturdays and Sundays — 2:30 p.m.
Teatro San Martín in Sala Casacuberta (Av. Corrientes 1530)
Tickets are AR$7.000 and can be purchased online
This light-hearted family-friendly comedy tells the story of Amadeo, the caretaker of an old theater that’s set to be destroyed. In order to save the theater, they must put on a show in record time.
Leading Amadeo and a quartet of imaginary musicians to put together a performance of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” As the show goes on, it becomes a mirror to the character’s own lives. Expect shadow puppets, fun wacky situations, and live music.
Fridays — Noon to 8 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays — 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Palermo Polo (Av. del Libertador 4096)
Pricing varies, tickets can be purchased online
Imaginá Bocha, a huge play area for kids up to the age of 12, has more than 100 activities including games, art, tech, sports, and nature. There’s more than 20 different areas, so that each kid can find something that suits their interests.
The venue is featuring special pricing and attractions for Children’s Day, including the Mega Inflatable Adventure — the largest inflatable bouncy space in Buenos Aires. It has a circuit of more than 200 meters of slides, tunnels, and climbing areas to play, jump, scream, cry, slide down things, and just generally exert energy.
