Heavy snow warning for popular Bariloche trekking spot

The Nahuel Huapi National Park in Bariloche has warned visitors that heavy snowfall is expected between today and Saturday

The authorities of Nahuel Huapi National Park in Bariloche have warned visitors that heavy snow is expected in the area between today and Saturday, May 3. Visitors are strongly advised against attempting any hikes in the park and, if they go anyway, do so at their own risk.

Nahuel Huapi National Park is home to several popular hikes and multi-day treks including the five-day Nahuel Huapi traverse, featuring the huts Frey, Jakob, Laguna Negra and López. There is no phone signal along much of the mountain route. Hikers in the park must register their trip within 48 hours of setting off, at any time of year.

The National Meteorological Service issued a “yellow alert”, warning that the region would be affected by heavy snowfall and those in the area should circulate with extreme caution. Paths and roads may close because of the snow.

Park authorities warned that the park is an exposed natural environment where trees and branches often fall across the paths, and recommended that visitors avoid outdoor activities. They said it was visitors’ responsibility to remain informed about which paths were closed, and that visitors assume full responsibility if they choose to disregard instructions in the area.

They added that visitors should secure any elements that may get blown away, avoid sheltering under trees, posts, or electrical wires, and check their vehicles are appropriately equipped before driving anywhere, including antifreeze fluid, snow chains, lights, and car height.

Finally, they asked for drivers to be aware of road conditions, taking particular caution in shadowy areas where there may be black ice. “Don’t forget that if your car breaks down, warning signs should be placed 50 or 60 meters from the car”, they noted.
