US Open: Sebastián Báez carries on momentum and gets into second round

Tomás Etcheverry is the other Argentine to win his match, while Schwartzman, Pella, Díaz and Podoroska are out

The second day of action at the  142nd US Open offered mixed results for Argentine players. While Sebastián Báez and Tomás Etcheverry won and made it to the second round, Facundo Diaz Acosta, Guido Pella and Diego Schwartzman all got eliminated from the men’s singles draw. The sole female player, Nadia Podoroska, was also eliminated.

The biggest win of the day was undoubtedly that of Sebastián Báez. The 22-year-old born in San Martín, Buenos Aires Province, beat Croatian Borna Coric 7-5, 7-5 and 6-1, after two hours and 35 minutes.

Báez, who sits 32nd in the ATP men’s singles rankings, got his first Grand Slam win just days after also defeating Coric in the Winston-Salem ATP 250 semifinals. His next rival will be Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves (ranked 168.)

In a four hour and 25 minutes five-set marathon Tomás Etcheverry got a close win over Finland’s Otto Virtanen (133) by 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 1-6, 6-4 and 7- 6 (10-5), as part of the last schedule of games.

He will now face Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka (49), who at 38 years, 5 months and 2 days defeated Japanese player Yoshihito Nishioka (44) 7-6, 6-2 and 6-4 to become the second oldest player to win a US Open match. The record belongs to Jimmy Connors, who won a match in 1992 at age 40.

For Argentine players, the good news ended there. Diego Schwartzman (114) struggled against France’s Arthur Rinderknech (73) and lost 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2.

Guido Pella (203) fought hard but ultimately fell to South African Lloyd Harris (177) by 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 and 6-4, in just over two hours.

Similarly, Facundo Díaz Acosta failed to “retire” veteran John Isner (157). The legendary big server from the United States, 38, has announced this will be his last tournament, but he’ll have one more match after beating the Argentine 6-4, 6-4 and 7-6.

Argentina’s sole representative in the women’s singles draw, Nadia Podoroska (70) was unable to do much to stop Chinese Qinwen Zheng (23), losing 6-1, 6-0 in just 63 minutes.

Number one seed Carlos Alcaraz, from Spain, benefited from German Dominik Koepfer (75) abandoning due to injury with the 6-2 and 3 -2 in favor of Alcaraz.

For his part, 2012 US Open Andy Murray (37) got his 200th Grand Slam victory Tuesday night. The British beat France’s Corentin Moutet (72), 6-2, 7 -5 and 6-3 after two hours and 58-minutes.
