The Argentine Davis Cup team is set to take on the Netherlands, as the two match up in the second round of the Davis Cup Final 8 qualifiers. The series will be played Friday, September 12 through Saturday, September, 13, in Groningen, the Netherlands.
The Albiceleste will be spearheaded by top-ranked singles player Francisco Cerúndolo (21st ATP singles ranked), with Francisco Comesaña (61) and Tomás Etcheverry (65) completing the singles lineup. In the doubles, 2025 US Open champion Horacio Zeballos will be joined by Andrés Molteni (19 in world doubles ranking). Former Argentine pro Javier Frana remains the team captain.
Argentina is aiming for a spot in the Final 8, a playoff-style tournament to decide the champion in November. Frana’s team narrowly beat Norway away at Oslo in February to reach this stage. It would be the Albiceleste’s second consecutive participation, after missing out in the 2021, 2022 and 2023.
The Netherlands qualified directly to the second round of qualifiers after finishing as runners-up in 2024. The biggest news for captain Paul Haarhuis’ team is the absence of Tallon Griekspoor (30), the top-ranked Dutch player. Jesper de Jong (83), Botic Van de Zandschulp (73), and Guy den Ouden (161) play the singles, with Sander Arends (24) and Sem Verbeek (43) as the doubles.
As the home team, the Netherlands gets to choose the venue and court surface. The matches will be played in the MartiniPlaza, an indoor arena located in Groningen, where a synthetic hard-court was installed. It’s a fast, low-bounce surface, very different to the clay courts where Argentines often excel.
Frana agreed the court is up to the standards, although he noticed some inconsistencies.
“There’s spots where the bounce sounds a bit more hollow,” said Frana, “That makes it so the ball bounces differently depending on where it lands.”
He also analyzed the Comesaña’s performance, who is debuting as a Davis Cup player for Argentina and has serious chances of playing at least one of the singles matchups.
“[He looks] very good, full of energy, in high spirits and always smiling,” said Frana. “He’s training incredibly well, it didn’t feel like it was his first time, particularly after such a long trip.”
The best-of-five series will begin on Friday, at 9:00 a.m. with two singles matches. Saturday will begin at the same hour with the doubles match, and will conclude with two singles matches. All times are Argentina time.
