Simply The Best? Why Messi isn’t the favorite in FIFA’s awards

The Argentine superstar is nominated for a record third award, but Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland provide hot competition

Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi is nominated for his third The Best FIFA Men’s Player. The awards, the only ones to be presented by football’s governing body, crown the world’s finest in several categories.

The ceremony is set to start this Monday at 4:30 pm Argentina time, and can be watched live via TyC Sports, DSports, TNT Sports and the FIFA+ streaming platform.

Messi will be competing against Manchester City and Norway striker Erling Haaland and his former teammate at PSG (and World Cup final rival) Kylian Mbappé. The Rosario-born star could win a record-breaking third award for best male player. After winning it in 2019 and 2022, he’s currently tied on two with Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo (2016 and 2017 winner) and Poland’s Robert Lewandowski (2020 and 2021 winner).

However, the award will only consider successes after the 2022 Qatar World Cup, which would limit Messi’s accolades to the 2023 Ligue 1 title with PSG and the 2023 Leagues Cup he won with Inter Miami. He did, however, become the all-time leading scorer in the top five European leagues, reaching 496 goals and beating Ronaldo’s record.

Haaland scored 34 league goals, proving a key member of Manchester city under coach Pep Guardiola. The team won the Premier League, the UEFA Champions League, and the FA Cup treble, as well as the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup, making him the favorite for the award.

Mbappé also won the 2023 Ligue 1, and finished the year with 27 goals, three more than Messi.

Messi is still likely to feature in the FIFA/FIFPRO World XI, which football’s governing body awards in conjunction with the professional footballers union. Every year, they select a lineup with the 11 best players of the year. The Argentine star has earned a spot there a record 16 times, and could extend his lead over second-placed Ronaldo (currently at 15).

The Albiceleste captain isn’t the only Argentine up for an award. Hugo Íñiguez, a Colón de Santa Fe fan, is nominated for the FIFA Fan Award after a video of him bottle feeding his baby son in the stands went viral.

“The heart-warming scene reflected the supporter’s will to kindle a passion for the club in his son from the earliest age,” FIFA highlighted when it revealed nominees in September.

Argentine fans as a collective won the award in 2022, after their passion at the Qatar World Cup was recognized by the world, with iconic fan “El Tula” being chosen to receive the prize.

The ceremony will be held at the Eventim Apollo theater in London and hosted by former French international Thierry Henry. The other awards, and their nominees, include:
