Messi’s 2022 World Cup jerseys go up for auction

The collection of six shirts is estimated to cost around US$10 million, with part of the proceeds going to charity

Six jerseys Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi wore during the 2022 Qatar World Cup will go up for auction. The Rosario-born striker made the announcement on Instagram, with part of the proceeds going to charity.

“[We] are announcing the auction of six jerseys I wore during the 2022 World Cup, including the one I wore during the final,” Messi wrote.

The jersey’s will be on [famed auction house] Sotheby’s website from November 30 to December 14. “Part of the proceeds will go to the UNICAS Project, led by the Sant Joan de Déu Children’s Hospital (SJD) in Barcelona, to cover the needs of children suffering from rare diseases,” the football star added.

The pack contains the shirts worn during the first half of the games against Saudi Arabia, Mexico (two group stage matches), Australia (round of 16), Netherlands (quarterfinals), Croatia (semifinal) and the final against France. All of them are the home, sky blue and white striped jersey variety. The purple away jersey, which Argentina only wore against Poland in the group stages, is not part of the set.

It is estimated that the collection could cost around US$10 million. The current holder of the world record for sports memorabilia is Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals Game 1 jersey, which went for US$10,091 million in September 2022.

The most expensive football jersey is Diego Maradona’s 1986 World Cup quarterfinals kit, which went for US$9.28 million in Sotheby’s London in May of the same year.

Messi’s jerseys will be displayed to the public at Sothesby’s New York, from November 30 to December 14.
