Pumas Sevens shoot up SVNS table with record title in Vancouver

The Argentine national rugby sevens team became one of just four teams to have won a single SVNS event four times or more

Argentina’s national rugby sevens team won their second title in 2025, beating South Africa 19-12 to win the 2025 Canada Sevens in Vancouver. The win sees them shoot up the table to lead the 2024-25 SVNS tournament with 28 points.

With head coach Santiago Gómez Cora recovering from a back injury in Buenos Aires, it was the second time assistant Leonardo Gravano had taken over the team.

The Pumas didn’t shine on the offensive side, struggling to build up long attacking sequences and instead relying on the pace and individual skill of players like Marcos Moneta, Joaquín Pellandini and Luciano González Rizzoni.

However, they looked sturdy in defence once again, receiving just six tries in six games. Having taken an early lead through tries by Pellandini, they managed to hold out for the win, snuffing attacks by the Springboks. It was the first win by any Pumas team in a final against South Africa.

“Maybe we didn’t showcase our best game, but we have other tools to back it up,” team captain Santiago Mare said afterwards. “When we aren’t inspired, we have that ‘Argentine’ side to give it our all. We’re proud of it.”

Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium has become a second home for the Pumas Sevens. They have become one of only four teams to win a single SVNS event four or more times. SVNS is the annual series of international rugby sevens tournaments run by World Rugby. The team is now also tied fifth with Samoa for the most individual event titles in the series.

The Pumas now lead the ranks with 68 points in the 2024-25 series, four above second-placed Spain. Fiji and South Africa are tied on third place with 62.

The two last tournaments in the regular season will be held in Hong Kong (March 28–30) and Singapore (April 5–6). After that, the best-ranked team will be crowned league winners, with the champion decided at a Grand Final to be held between May 3 and 4, in Los Angeles.
