Pumas legend Juan Martín Hernández to be inducted into World Rugby Hall of Fame

Lauded as a ‘once in a generation-player,’ the 2007 bronze medalist will become the fourth Argentine inductee

Former Argentine rugby star Juan Martín Hernández will be inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame, the sport’s governing body announced Tuesday. The ceremony will take place at the World Rugby gala on October 29, in Paris, as part of the World Cup closing party.

Hernández played for Argentina’s national rugby union team, the Pumas, from 2003 to 2017, retiring with 74 test appearances and 176 points. Nicknamed “The Magician”, he broke through at Argentine club Deportiva Francesa, and was able to shine in different positions. He started his career as a fullback, but it would be his performance as a fly-half at the 2007 Rugby World Cup that would cement his legacy.

His performance helped Argentina achieve a historic bronze medal at the tournament, beating locals France twice, first in the Group Stage and then for third-place game. Hernández’ handwork and skill with his foot were a constant throughout the tournament and earned him a nomination for World Rugby Player of the Year.

“Hernández was a once in a generation player,” commented World Rugby on the announcement of his inclusion. “He had a brilliant set of skills that made him look effortless on the pitch.”

Four other inductees will join the Argentine star in his class. New Zealand’s Dan Carter, Australia’s George Smith, France’s Thierry Dusautoir, and South Africa’s Bryan Habana will also be inducted in Paris. Habana, ironically, was part of the Springboks team that denied Hernandez’ Argentina a place in the 2007 World Cup final.

An injury deprived Hernández of the opportunity to play in the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He managed to play in the tournament for the third time in England in 2015, mainly at center, where Argentina came in fourth behind New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

Hernández joins three other Argentines in the World Rugby Hall of Fame, namely Hugo Porta (class of 2007), Agustín Pichot (2010) and Felipe Contepomi (2017).
