Rugby World Cup: Argentina beats Japan, reaches quarter-finals

Los Pumas won 39-27 against the Brave Blossoms at Stade de la Beaujoire, France

Argentina is through to the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals after the national men’s team Los Pumas beat Japan 39-27 on Sunday morning at Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, France.

Following the hard-earned victory against the Brave Blossoms, Argentina has managed to slip into the second position of the D group, right behind England. Sunday’s victory comes after beating Chile 59-5 last Saturday.

“We are a very dangerous team, we have the players to fight against the best in the world,” wing Mateo Carreras told sports TV station ESPN. His performance was the highlight of the game, scoring three tries. Santiago Chocobares, Emiliano Boffelli, and Nicolás Sánchez also scored.

It’s the fourth time that the Pumas have reached the group of the best eight teams in a rugby world cup. They previously reached the quarter-finals in 1999, 2007, 2011, and 2015. Argentina will play against Wales for a spot in the semi-finals on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Marseilles.

“Now, we have to enjoy this victory and tomorrow start thinking about Wales to get into the semifinals,” said Carreras. “I want to dedicate this to our 10 teammates that weren’t able to play today but train all week long and set a high standard for those who play.”
