Brazil could miss 2026 World Cup, FIFA warns

Football’s highest governing body has threatened the Brazilian Football Confederation with sanctions following the destitution of its president

The Brazilian men’s national football team could miss the next World Cup, FIFA has warned. World football’s governing body is considering excluding the Verdeamarelha from all international competitions following the destitution of Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) president Ednaldo Rodrigues.

FIFA sent the CBF a letter with the support of the South American football confederation, Conmebol. In the letter, it points out that under no circumstances does it accept the intervention of governments in its member federations. Based on this, FIFA says it won’t recognize the authority of interventor José Perdiz, designated by the Rio de Janeiro Court.

“FIFA and Conmebol will send a joint commission to Brazil during the week of January 8 to meet with stakeholders,” reads the letter sent by FIFA, adding that the goal is to “examine the current situation, and work together to find a solution to the current state of affairs regarding the application of CBF rules and its autonomy.”

In it, they state that should elections take place before this date, the organization will consider suspending the CBF for a period of time during which any CBF representative team and club teams would be unable to take part in any international competition.

Should this happen, Brazil would find itself with many national teams who aren’t part of FIFA and are therefore unable to compete in the World Cup and other official competitions sanctioned by football’s governing body.

The Rio de Janeiro Court dismissed Rodrigues on December 7 after they found irregularities in his election as president last year. The court appointed Perdiz as interim president of the CBF to organize new elections.

The case is not without precedents. In 2017, FIFA suspended the Malian Football Federation (FMF) after considering there was “undue interference” by the country’s government. On that occasion, the Malian Minister of Sports dissolved the FMF’s executive committee and appointed a provisional committee to manage the association and arrange for the election of a new board of directors.
