Boca Juniors and Racing Club vie for spot in Copa Libertadores semis

The series is tied after both clubs drew in their opener at La Bombonera 0-0

Boca Juniors and Racing Club will face off Wednesday night with a spot in the Copa Libertadores semi-final on the line after the two teams tied 0-0 at La Bombonera last week.

The two Argentine powerhouses played a mostly uneventful match in their series opener and each will be looking to improve their form.

Racing fans received some good news when Coach Fernando Gago announced the return of two starters, Colombian striker Roger Martínez and midfielder Juan Ignacio Nardoni. Both had been sidelined with muscle injuries but were listed as available for Wednesday’s match.

Martínez in particular has been an asset for Gago, playing a key role in the club’s recovery after losing 4-2 in the round of 16 against Atlético Nacional.

Striker Nicolás Reniero and defender Nazareno Colombo are also back from injuries.

For Boca, the biggest news is the return of Valentín Barco. The promising youngster was the Xeneizes’ best player in the first leg of the series before coming off early in the second half after colliding with a Racing player. Tests showed a tear of the iliopsoas muscle, but the 19-year-old has recovered in time for Boca coach Jorge Almirón to name him as part of the squad.

The winner of Wednesday’s match will likely face the Brazilian giants, Palmeiras. The three-time winners of the Copa Libertadores defeated Colombia’s Deportivo Pereira 4-0 on the road and only need to preserve their aggregate lead at home in São Paulo to advance.

In a separate quarterfinal matchup, Brazil’s Internacional beat Bolivia’s Bolivar 3-0 overall to advance to the semis. That club will now face the winner of the clash between Brazil’s Fluminense and Paraguay’s Olimpia after the former won the first leg 2-0 at home.

Racing hosts Boca this Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. Argentina time, with Uruguayan Andrés Matonte as the game’s referee. If the clubs remain tied at the end of extra time, the series will be settled with a penalty shootout.

The game can be watched on Telefé, Fox Sports or the streaming platform Star+.
