The Argentina Open 2025 kicked off on Monday with four games in the singles draw, with defending champion Facundo Diaz Acosta (ATP singles ranking 75) and Davis Cup hero Mariano Navone (47) among those taking the court.

The biggest game of the day was undoubtedly the one that pitted Diaz Acosta against Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild (77). The defending champion had a lot on the line: a defeat would see him lose almost all of the 250 points he earned winning the 2024 tournament and drop out of the top 100.

The Argentine player started the game solidly. In a match that was very much a hard-hitter affair, he regularly overpowered Seyboth Wild. Comfortable on his own serve, he took an early break off the Brazilian’s serve to lead 3-1 and carried that advantage on to take the first set 6-3.

However, things started to unravel in the second, with Seyboth Wild breaking early to take a 2-0 lead. And while Diaz Acosta recovered to tie 2-2, he was unable to take advantage of the Brazilian’s erratic form and quickly found himself down a breaked serve at 4-2. Seyboth broke the Argentine’s serve once again to wrap up the second set by 6-2.

It was very much the same affair in the third set, with the Brazilian player building up confidence while Díaz Acosta started to struggle with his serve. Seyboth Wild took the lead 4-2, and the defending champion was unable to recover. The Brazilian, who seemed to enjoy the jeers from the crowd and earned a couple of boos after jeering up his fellow countrymen in attendance, won the last set 6-3 to close up the game.

He’ll now face the winner of the match between Argentines Sebastián Báez and Camilo Ugo Carabelli.

The last game of the day was the clash between Francisco Comesaña (84) and Davis Cup hero Mariano Navone (47).

Comesaña was coming off a big 2024, where he reached Wimbledon third round, beating world number six Andrey Rublev. He was unable to make it count against Navone, however, who was in the form of his life after sealing Argentina’s 3-2 win in the Davis Cup against Sweden.

Navone pushed Comesaña back constantly with deep strokes and raced to the lead, taking two breaks to go up 5-1. A late rally by Comesaña saw him claw back to 4-5 and gave fans a bit to cheer for, but Navone ended up wrapping the first 6-4.

The second set was a repeat of the same story, with Navone taking an early lead and running away with it. Comesaña had a brief moment in which he hoped to revert the result when Navone cramped up at one point, but eventually managed to hold on for a 6-4 win. He’ll face Denmark’s Holger Rune (14) for a spot in the quarterfinals.

“I’m not setting any goals for myself,” he told the Herald after the match. “I go from game to game, looking for good performances.”

The 23-year-old made his Buenos Aires debut as No. 117-ranked qualifier last year but lost in the first round to Luciano Darderi. Now, as the fourth-best-ranked Argentine player in the tournament, he isn’t taking anything for granted.

“I got to prepare myself for the tournament in a great mood. It’s always great when good things happen after you put in the work. Now I can go out and enjoy playing here without any pressure,” he said.

Earlier, during the day shift, Serbian Dusan Lajovic (81) beat Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena (50) 7-6 (8), 7-5. The Serbian made his 9th main draw appearance in Buenos Aires, second to only Argentine Diego Schwartzman (11) as the players in the 2025 tournament who have more appearances. Lajovich will now play against world number two Alex Zverev from Germany in the round of 16.

The following match featured Serbian Lazlo Djere (112) beating France’s Alexandre Muller (58) 6-3, 6-3. His next rival will be Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (27).
