The night shift opened to an Argentine duel as the country’s top ranked player, Francisco Cerúndolo (22nd ATP singles ranked), took on Facundo Diaz Acosta (87). However, it was the gold medalist at the Santiago 2023 Panamericans who shocked his much favored countrymen, winning 7-6 (3), 6-0.

The first set was hotly contested. Diaz Acosta took the lead early, breaking Cerúndolo’s serve, but the game quickly became chaotic, with both players trading blows and breaks. Their closely matched styles, with both players able to defend for long stints, meant they required a tie-break to decide it, with Diaz Acosta taking it 7-6 (3).

In the second set, Diaz Acosta took advantage of an increasingly erratic and frustrated Cerúndolo, who vented his anger, smashing his racket on the floor. With hardly any opposition, Diaz Acosta built a commanding lead and served with confidence to wrap it up 6-0.

“Playing with a countryman is always a different type of game,” said Diaz Acosta after the game. “I started playing very well in the second set but I was surprised with how things went. I think I was able to sustain my level and he was a bit more shaky, but I tried not to linger too much on that because sometimes you lose focus.”

“I’m trying to play more and more games at this level and build up my confidence. Going all the way to a fifth set at the Australian Open with [American world number 9 Taylor Fritz] gave me a lot of confidence despite losing. Being able to sustain my game physically for five sets through over four hours gives you confidence and teaches you a lot.”

He will face Dusan Lajovic (58) in the quarterfinals on Friday, after the Serbian beat Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (54) 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.

Earlier in the day, Argentine Tomás Etcheverry (27th ATP singles ranked) beating Colombian Daniel Galán (80th) 6-3, 6-0 in one hour and 23 minutes of play.

Stan Wawrinka (60) faced off against third seed Chilean Nicolás Jarry (21) to wrap up the night shift. The Chilean will now face Tomás Etcheverry on Friday for a spot in the semifinals.

The first set was tightly contested, with Wawrinka defending for long periods of time against Jarry’s offensive game. Without a clear winner, the game went into a tie-break where the Swiss former world number three showed a calmer hand, winning 7-6 (3).

The 38-year-old was the fan’s favorite and wasn’t shy about looking for their support, while a large Chilean contingent of Chilean fans earned plenty of boos from the Argentine crowd.

In the second set, Jarry found more composure and was able to put Wawrinka against the ropes, securing two breaks of serve to win 6-2.

The game grew more tense in the third set, as chants of “olé, olé, olé Stan” did little to ease tensions with the Chilean’s fans, with Wawrinka’s early break of serve sending the fans into a roar.

The Swiss was unable to hold the advantage at 5-4, and had to save a match point for Jarry at 6-5 to send the game to a tie break. There, the Chilean’s powerful serve and consistent groundstrokes earned him three more match points, and he needed all three, only securing the win with his serve for 7-6 (5).

“For me, right now the most important thing is to keep pushing myself,” said an emotional Wawrinka in the press conference. “The level I played this week was great. I played against a top 25 player and showed I can still beat some top guys, enjoy the moment, enjoy the emotions that I felt and accept the loss. Tomorrow I’ll go back to practice and hopefully be back next year.”
