Argentina fails Basketball World Cup qualifier

It’s the first time since 1982 that the country won’t participate

The Argentine men’s basketball team lost 79-75 against the Dominican Republic on Sunday and failed to qualify for the Basketball World Cup for the first time since 1982. The same team came second in the last World Cup in 2019.

“It sucks that we can’t be in the World Cup but our mentality now has to be to think about what’s coming, work and move forward with this group,” said Facundo Campazzo, the captain of the team, to TyC Sports. “You have to credit the Dominican Republic, they played an incredible match.”

Argentina was in the lead for most of the match by 17 points but stopped scoring in the third quarter. In the fourth, with just two minutes to go, the Dominican Republic tied the game 71-71 and consolidated their 79-75 win with seconds to spare.

The match was played in the Polideportivo Islas Malvinas stadium in the city of Mar del Plata in Buenos Aires province.

“I would rather be here with my brothers feeling this horrible sensation than be anywhere else,” Campazzo said.
