Argentina beats France 3-2, reaches Futsal World Cup final

The Albiceleste reaches its third consecutive tournament final and will look to reclaim the title

The Argentine men’s national futsal team is on the verge of another world title after beating France 3-2 on Thursday to reach the 2024 World Cup final. Two goals by Kevin Arrieta and one by Angel Claudino proved enough to seal the deal at Uzbekistan, where five-time champion Brazil awaits.

The semifinal was a tense affair. With the drama that’s come to be expected of every clash between Argentina and France, the teams traded blows until the very end.

Arrieta opened the scoreboard two minutes into the game through a penalty. France managed to tie things up just three minutes later courtesy of a low shot from outside the area by Nicolás Menendez. The Albiceleste kept pushing, and took the lead once again in the seventh minute, when Cristian Borruto dribbled past two French defenders to assist Claudino, who tapped the ball into the back of the net. Despite plenty of chances for both teams, the game went to half time at 2-1.

The game gained in intensity in the second half the game grew in intensity, with both teams pushing for a result. France hit first in the 25th minute when Mamadou Touré scored from a Menéndez rebound to tie it 2-2. With just two and a half minutes left on the clock, Arrieta took advantage of a big chance from a free kick to score the 3-2 that sealed Argentina’s  ticket to the final.

“My first thought is for my family, they’re my biggest supporters” said man of the match Arrieta after the game. “It’s a beautiful feeling, I would’ve never imagined I would score the game-winner.”

It was the 27-year-old’s seventh goal in this World Cup, where he sits tied with Alan Brandi as the top goal scorers for Argentina in the tournament. It’s a terrific return for a player that nearly missed the 2024 World Cup; he wasn’t part of head coach Matías Lucuix’s initial call-up, and was only included after Andrés Geragthy was injured in the lead up to the tournament.

This will be Argentina’s third consecutive World Cup final. They beat Rusia 5-4 in Colombia 2016 to win it all but couldn’t defend the title in Lithuania 2021, falling 2-1 against Portugal.  Brazil is the competition’s record winner, with five titles; however, their last win was in 2012. It beat Ukraine 3-2 on Tuesday.

The final will take place on Sunday at the Uzbek capital of Tashkent. It will kick off at 12 p.m. Argentina time, and can be watched live via Argentina’s national public broadcaster, TV Pública, for free or through the cable sports channel DSports.
