A group of ten Argentines who had been deported from the United States arrived in Buenos Aires in the early hours of Thursday. The U.S. homeland security department accused them of having entered the country illegally.

The Omni Air International plane that brought them arrived into Ezeiza airport shortly after 3 a.m. The deportees disembarked without issue, with their suitcases and belongings in white bags.

“We’re not criminals, we’re just going for the American dream,” one 25-year-old deportee told news channel TN. He had been detained in San Antonio, Texas. He said that he was treated well by the U.S. authorities and that Argentina’s foreign ministry worked to ensure the transfers could be carried out smoothly.

The Argentines left on Wednesday from Fort Worth, Texas, at 12:48 a.m. local time. From there, they travelled to Louisiana. They then boarded a second flight bound for Bogotá, Colombia, where they took a third flight to Belo Horizonte, in Brazil, before finally arriving in Buenos Aires.

Argentine ambassador to the U.S., Alejandro Oxenford, downplayed the impact of the recent deportations. In radio statements he said that the number of Argentines facing deportation was “infinitesimal” compared with other countries and emphasized that Argentina is among the countries with the fewest expulsion cases by U.S. authorities.

“We provide all the care that, of course, all Argentine citizens always deserve. We have always done so and will continue to do so. The other thing I can say is that there were no incidents,” he added.

According to diplomatic sources, the decision to deport these people is a unilateral measure by the United States, taken without considering criminal records.
