Six-hour train strike in Buenos Aires as workers demand pay rise

The measure is scheduled for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. but will affect trains after that due to scheduling

Trains in Buenos Aires will be halted for six hours on Tuesday due to a strike on all five lines operated by public company Trenes Argentinos. The stoppage is set to take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Service disruption could continue for an hour or more after the end of the strike, depending on the train line’s schedule.

The affected lines are Roca, Sarmiento, San Martín, Mitre, and Belgrano Sur. These trains connect Buenos Aires city with the populous cities in the outskirts to the north, south and west, in Buenos Aires province, known as the conurbano. More than a million people travel between the city and the conurbano each day for work or other activities.

Long-distance services to and from Mar del Plata scheduled to depart during the strike will operate normally, according to a government statement.

Rail staff from the La Fraternidad union announced the strike last Tuesday as part of demands for a pay rise. During the stoppage, they will also meet for an assembly to discuss their situation.

The government failed to reach an agreement to stop the strike. On Monday, authorities displayed a message on train station screens saying that services would be halted on Tuesday “due to a union measure from La Fraternidad, led by Omar Maturano.” This is not the first time the government has used train station screens to single out union leaders for organizing protests and strikes.

The government has said it expects to lose at least AR$100 million (around US$93,500 at the official rate, US$86,000 at the MEP rate), in ticket sales because of the strike.
