Thousands celebrate Pope Francis’ decade in the Vatican

Thousands marched behind the Our Lady of Luján and held mass to celebrate the Latin American Pope

In March 2013, the world learned that the white smoke emerging from the Vatican signified the first Latin American pope — Argentina’s Jorge Mario Bergoglio. This weekend, thousands of faithful followers filled the streets of Luján, Argentina’s “Capital of Faith” 60 kilometers away from the capital, to celebrate his 10th anniversary.

Catholics walked over a kilometre during a raging heatwave from the center of Luján towards its cathedral, where a mass was led by the Argentine Episcopal Conference (CEA)’s president, Oscar Ojea. Ojea, or el padre Pepe (Father Pepe), is well known for his solidarity work in low-income area

The joy in the crowd was accompanied by “Father Daniel’s” children’s murga music group, who danced wearing their traditional glittery costumes.

The march was led by Our Lady of Luján, a 16th-century traditional statue of the Virgin Mary, to whom the faithful paid tribute as patroness of Argentina.

At 8.30 p.m., Palito Ortega, a popular 1970s singer and producer, performed before the crowds.
