The Milei administration issued a decree simplifying steps for firearms permits by allowing potential users — either civilians or members of the security forces — to apply for them online.
A government site will centralize a buyer’s information regarding legal background checks. If they are cleared, they will be issued a credential authorizing them to legally purchase a firearm. They will also be allowed to buy an Ammunition Consumption Card (TCCM, for its Spanish initials), in order to keep tabs on how much ammunition they buy.
The issue of ownership credentials will cost AR$20,000 (around US$20 at the official rate), while getting a TCCM will be AR$10,000 (around US$10).
This will all be done through the National Agency of Controlled Materials (ANMAC, for its Spanish initials) application, the government body in charge of the matter. The app, called “MiANMAC,” will be available to download from the Mi Argentina website.
This digital mechanism will also automatically identify members of the Armed Forces and different security forces, including police and penitentiary service officers, in order to “assure immediate and digital traceability of all legal and operational conditions.”
Milei has been vocal about his desire to reduce gun-ownership requirements ever since the campaign trail.
His government had already loosened requirements for firearms businesses and manufacturers. According to a decree published in early May, all companies involved in these operations no longer need municipal permits. By December 2024, his administration had already lowered the age for ownership from 21 to 18.
According to the legislation passed late last year, requirements for gun ownership are:
– Be 18 or over
– Do not present psychic or physical abnormalities that incapacitate the petitioner for the possession of firearms. When there are justified reasons, the presentation of a medical certificate may be required.
– Proof of identity, an address, and a lawful means of livelihood must be presented to the police station in the jurisdiction where the interested party lives.
