Girl, 14, fires gun at school in town in Mendoza province, Argentina

No injuries have been reported and the teenager has been taken safely to hospital, authorities say

A 14-year-old student entered a school in the town of La Paz, Mendoza, with a firearm and fired at least three times on Wednesday. The student eventually handed the pistol over to the local police, and was transferred to a hospital.

According to the testimony of one of the students at the school, the girl entered the institution with the gun unloaded, then during recess went to the bathroom, loaded it, and threatened several classmates. A large security operation was set up at the scene, and students were evacuated.

Videos of the incident show the teenager walking around with a pistol in her hand. In another, loud bangs can be heard inside a classroom. The children were taken to a hospital two blocks from the school.

“It was a successful procedure, where the Mendoza police worked very well overall. From the Public Prosecutor’s Office, we supported the great work of the police. The minor is doing well. She is with her parents,” said prosecutor Mariano Carabajal at the end of the operation, explaining that the girl had been taken to a hospital.

In an interview on Radio 10, the mayor of La Paz, Fernando Ubieta, said: “the situation is very sad, very painful, for a department that is very small.”

The town, which has a population of around 7,000, is 140 kilometers from the city of Mendoza.

The local educational authorities asked the general public not to go to the school, because it was “a situation where safety and respect for the best interests of the child involved and her environment must prevail.” A crisis committee of professionals and specialist teams was handling the situation, they added.

During a press conference, Mendoza’s Minister of Education, Tadeo García Salazar, explained that the negotiation lasted more than three hours.

Regarding the student’s situation, he stressed that “there is no record in the student’s school file of bullying or anything related to that,” while also clarifying that “if there were, appropriate professionals would be assigned to address it.”
