Man with ‘soviet ideology’ arrested for Milei Instagram threat

The 29-year-old also allegedly threatened to shoot his interlocutor and attack pro-government protesters

Argentina police arrest man who threatened to kill Javier Milei on Instagram

Argentina’s Federal Police have arrested a man for allegedly threatening to kill President Javier Milei during an Instagram argument. In a release published Wednesday, the Security Ministry said the accused has “ideology very similar to former Soviet Union political propaganda” and ties with communist groups that could disrupt public order.

The man was reported by an Instagram user who said that during an argument, the accused threatened to shoot him and Milei in the head and claimed he wanted to attack people who march in support of the government.

The accused, a 29-year-old Argentine national who lives in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Chacarita, was arrested in the street in the early hours of Wednesday morning. He is being investigated for “public intimidation.”

Officers found his address after searching for his personal information and investigating his social media accounts, where they found the alleged communist posts. After securing a warrant, police also searched his house and confiscated his phone for further investigation.

This is not the first time a person has been detained over social media posts in recent months. Last week, two men who had been arrested over X posts mocking former Jujuy governor Gerardo Morales and his wife were freed after spending 54 days in pre-trial detention.

Morales denied they had been arrested for their online activity alone, and claimed they had taken part in a smear campaign that caused psychological harm to his wife and two-year-old daughter.
