Senate plans session tomorrow following blow-up

The first attempt failed amid screaming matches two weeks ago

Today, government and opposition senators have agreed to hold a session at noon on April 13th and reached a consensus on an agenda.

The first attempt at a session this year failed on March 31st after screaming matches erupted and opposition members left the floor, meaning that there weren’t enough senators present to achieve quorum and the session fell through.

The crux of the disagreement was the agenda, specifically the order of the agenda, as opposition members demanded removing issues from the table that hadn’t been agreed to previously.

Tomorrow’s agenda will include naming judges in Santa Fe and Córdoba provinces, the “Zero Alcohol” Law — a total ban on consuming alcohol before driving — and the Ley Lucio, named after Lucio Dupuy, which would educate government staff about child abuse.

If all goes to plan, it would be the first time that Senate votes on legislation since November 2022.

Establishing quorum and agreements in the house was made more difficult this year after four senators broke away from the ruling coalition in February. This left governing Frente de Todos (FdT) with just 31 senators — two less than the opposition, making it increasingly difficult for them to pass legislation or hold a quorum.
