Coalición Cívica (CC) founder and Juntos por el Cambio (JxC) Parlasur deputy candidate Elisa Carrió was admitted to a health center in Santa Fe province on Wednesday after suffering a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), which is similar to a stroke.
Her health condition is evolving favorably, and she is expected to be discharged this Thursday.
A TIA happens when blood supply to part of the brain is briefly blocked. It’s similar to a stroke, but only lasts a few minutes. TIAs are often a warning sign for future strokes, according to MedlinePlus, an online health information resource from the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM).
The symptoms include numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body; confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech; trouble seeing in one or both eyes; difficulty walking; dizziness; and loss of balance or coordination.
Carrió was at a political campaign lunch at a social club in Esperanza city, Santa Fe province, when she started feeling dizziness and muscular pain, Santa Fe province deputy candidate Lucila Lehmann, who was with Carrió, told Télam.
Emergency services were quickly called in, and it was decided she should be admitted to an Esperanza sanatorium. At the healthcare facility she underwent “more specific studies,” taking into account that she has a history of cardiac pathologies, Lehmann recalled.
Carrió is still under medical supervision, but she’s recovering well and will most likely be discharged this Thursday, Lehmann told LT9 Santa Fe radio station.
“She has pre-existing conditions — she’s had a heart attack, has diabetes. She’s a risk patient, who requires special care,” the candidate added.
“[Carrió] was always lucid, never lost consciousness or her sense of humor. She joked with the doctors,” Lehmann said.
National deputy and Coalición Cívica leader Maximiliano Ferraro had initially announced that Carrió had been hospitalized “after suffering dizziness and muscular pain.”
Although she was first taken to the coronary care unit, she is now in a common room, according to Lehmann.
Doctors at the Esperanza sanatorium announced this Wednesday that the “chest pain” she felt was compatible with a TIA.
They added that several health studies and clinical analysis were conducted to evaluate the full extent of her condition. “She’s currently staying at the institution under her own free will and of the medical team” to see how she evolves.
The medical report also stated that no additional information would be provided out of respect for Carrió’s privacy, and asked the public to do the same.
In February, Carrió had announced she would be running for president in the JxC primaries. However, upon the candidates registration deadline in June, she was ultimately chosen to run for Mercosur Parliament — known as Parlasur— deputy on PRO presidential candidate Horacio Rodríguez Larreta’s ballot.
