Javier Milei’s candidate for Buenos Aires province drops out

Chivilcoy Mayor Guillermo Britos announced he would not run for governor with Milei’s party

Chivilcoy Mayor Guillermo Britos confirmed this morning in a press conference that he will not run as a candidate for governor under the ultra-right coalition La Libertad Avanza. Party leader and presidential hopeful Javier Milei had offered him a place on the ticket in the October general elections.

“Ever since I was offered the candidacy I felt honored, I appreciated and respected it, and it’s a unique offer in my career. I also believe Javier Milei will have an extraordinary election,” said Britos in a press conference, according to Chivilcoy Al Día newspaper.

“Chivilcoy must come first, and yesterday I communicated to the people in the party that I will not run for governor for personal reasons,” he said and announced that he has decided to run for another term as mayor of that city in the northern Buenos Aires province.

“I haven’t had any problem with any party member and I hope they do great,” he said, confirming that “before June 24 we will announce who will be leading our ticket”.

Britos is 59 years old and graduated from the “Juan Vucetich” School of Police of the Buenos Aires province with the rank of Deputy Officer.

He was made General Commissioner after serving in several cities of the province and also majored in Law at the National University of Lomas de Zamora (UNLZ).

After 30 years of service in the Buenos Aires Province Police, he left the force in 2011 to move into politics and was elected state deputy.

Later, in 2015 he partnered with Economy Minister Sergio Massa’s Frente Renovador (FR) and was elected as Chivilcoy mayor but in 2019 he jumped to the Consenso Federal party then formed by former Economy Minister Roberto Lavagna and Ramiro Marra (currently a La Libertad Avanza candidate for mayor of Buenos Aires City). In 2021, Britos left that party and founded his own, Chivilcoy Primero.
