Coldplay shares SNL stage with Argentine pop star Tini Stoessel

They performed their collaboration song ‘We Pray’ from the band’s latest album ‘Moon Music’

British rock band Coldplay expressed their love for Argentina once again, this time during their appearance on Saturday Night Live hosted by Nate Bargatze. To celebrate the release of their new album Moon Music, the band led by Chris Martin sang We Pray alongside Argentine pop star Tini Stoessel.

The band’s 10th studio album was released on Friday. It includes 10 new songs, including We Pray and All My Love, the two songs they decided to sing during their SNL presentation.

The song We Pray, released in August, has several studio versions featuring Tini and other artists like Palestinian-Chilean singer Elyanna and rappers Little Simz and Burna Boy. Both Tini and Elyanna were onstage with Coldplay for the SNL performance.

“I’m so moved I can’t stop crying, I have no words,” Tini wrote on X after their performance.

But who is Tini Stoessel? Martina Stoessel, better known as Tini, jumped to stardom at 15 as the lead actress in Disney Channel’s teen musical show, Violetta. She also recorded the Spanish version of Disney’s Frozen song Let It Go. In 2016 she released her first album. Although she was still linked to Disney at the time, she has since veered away from the company to become one of the country’s most popular solo artists, delving into pop, urban, and Latin music.

Tini has performed with Coldplay before, during their 2022 Music of the Spheres Tour which made Coldplay the first band to perform 10 back-to-back River Plate Stadium shows in Buenos Aires. During one of their performances, Coldplay invited Tini onstage for the song Let Somebody Go — which originally features Selena Gómez — and Tini’s Carne y Hueso.

On August 23, Tini announced the release of We Pray, saying Coldplay is her favorite band.

“Getting to know Chris beyond the artist, as a person, is such a blessing,” she wrote on social media. Days after that, Coldplay filmed the We Pray music video featuring Tini, Elyanna, Little Simz, and Burna Boy in Dublin, and also performed it live on stage in the same city.

Chris Martin said in a series of interviews with Tini released in early September that he got the idea for the song in several dreams while staying in Taiwan. One of those dreams included listening to Tini performing while he was outside a theater in Argentina. “She was singing this melody, ‘La, la, la…’ I woke up and said, that’s the end of We Pray,” Martin said. “I told her about the dream, and she said yes.”

Coldplay already had Argentina close to their heart, but their love for the country considerably deepened after their record 10 performances in Buenos Aires. Their latest album’s cover is a picture of a rainbow and a crescent moon in the middle taken by Argentine photographer Matías Alonso Revelli.

“During the pandemic, I was at home when my dad called to tell me I should go to the backyard and look to the sky,” Revelli said in an Instagram post back in June. “What I saw was this wonderful rainbow right above my head. I rushed to get my camera, took a couple of pictures, went inside to edit them as I usually do and that was it, now it’s the cover art for Coldplay’s Moon Music.” According to him, Chris Martin contacted him directly for permission to use the picture as the album cover.

Additionally, Argentine artist and graphic designer Pilar Zeta was in charge of the album’s design.

Argentines also had the privilege of an exclusive listening session of the Moon Music album days before its release, reserved for just a couple hundred fans. The experience happened at the Ischigualasto Park in San Juan, a UNESCO World Heritage site better known as the Moon Valley (Valle de la Luna in Spanish) for its Mars-like geological formations.
