Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher engaged in a heated series of social media exchanges with Argentine X users, following a debate over the passion of English and Argentine football fans.
The exchange, a tongue-in-cheek interaction over football culture and working-class identities, began when an Argentine used derogatory terms to express envy about the Oasis hit-song Wonderwall being turned into an official football chant for the UK team.
The user complained about how Argentines were allegedly represented instead by “villero” culture, a slur used to describe people living in informal urban settlements in Buenos Aires.
A second user then responded that the Manchester-born, working-class brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher were actually the UK social equivalent to that same demographic and that their lyrics reflected those origins as well as habits like alcohol and drugs.
But when a third one described them as “planeros” — a discriminatory, classist slang word to describe people who receive some form of welfare subsidy from the state — and said they spent their unemployment benefits on drugs, Gallagher hit back — thanks to X’s automatic translations — in his usual, swaggering style.
“Nothing wrong with that what else we gonna spend it on you walnut whopper,” he wrote.
The post quickly drew the attention of Argentine users on the platform. Responses and mentions cascaded, as Gallagher kept replying.
“This will be remembered as the day Liam Gallagher said he was a proud ‘planero,’” a user wrote.
“Been called WORSE,” the frontman responded.

Meanwhile, Gallagher was also sparring with fans of Mexico’s national team, which is set to clash with England on Sunday for the final 16 round.
It all began when the Oasis frontman replied to a follower, predicting England would win 5-0. The post went viral within minutes, triggering a wave of backlash. This included Fher Olvera, singer of popular Mexican pop band Maná, which sold out several dates in Buenos Aires two years ago and is set to play in River Plate stadium in December.
“The Oasis singer said Mexico will lose 0-5 to England. Come on, dude. Get a grip,” he said indignantly. “See you Sunday, and we’ll see how it goes. Give me a break.”
Argentine fans also weighed in. Journalist Gabriela Pepe got a reply back from Gallagher after she ironically said the choice between the two bands was a tough one.
“Oh no, so hard to choose between the Gallagher brothers and that Maná guy, said no one ever,” she wrote.
Gallagher agreed with a one-word hit: “EXACTLY.”
