The Argentine men’s basketball team has made it into the FIBA AmeriCup quarterfinals, beating Colombia 84-83 with the final touch of the ball.
The Albiceleste are now waiting to know who they’re facing next.
It was a tight game for Argentina. The team had lost their previous game to the Dominican Republic in extra time in a troubled affair that ended with an open brawl, earning three Argentine players a ban.
Needing a win to remain in the tournament, Argentina raced into the lead in the first quarter, ending 29-17, but the Cafeteros quickly turned things around in the second, wrapping up the first half 41-40 to Colombia.
The Albiceleste came out swinging again in the third quarter and took a 62-58 lead into the final 10 minutes, but had to withstand another comeback attempt by Colombia. With the score 83-82 in favor of the Cafeteros and 2.9 seconds on the clock, former NBA small forward Nicolás Brussino tapped in a missed shot by Juan Fernández to secure the win with the last touch of the ball.
“It was a tough game, we knew we’d require something extra,” head coach Pablo Prigioni told the press after the match. “The guys did a terrific job. They fought and believed until the end we could win it. Luck was on our side with that last ball, but it was an incredibly tight game.”
Fernández, the 22-year-old center who led Argentina with 36 points and 16 rebounds, also valued the team’s effort.
“We knew we had to take a step forward and we did it,” he said after the match. “I wanted to help the team and luckily the coin fell on our side. Colombia is a great team, very imposing physically, and made it very hard for us.
Argentina now has to wait to learn who the next rival will be. The AmeriCup is a continental tournament played every four years between 12 teams. They are split into three groups of four, and the top two teams of each group plus the two best third-placed teams proceed to the next stage. The teams are then ranked from one to eight, depending on their results.
The Albiceleste is currently fifth, but could fall to sixth depending on the results of the remaining games. That means they could face the USA, Uruguay, or the Bahamas. All games are set to be played on Thursday, August 28.
