Ricardo Darín, star of the hit series The Eternaut will star in one of the platform’s two new Argentine films, which Netflix announced on Monday.
Hernán Goldfrid’s Lo dejamos acá (Let’s finish here), produced by the actor’s own company Kenya Films, focuses on a pragmatic psychoanalyst (played by Darín) who loses faith in conventional psychological methods and begins to push the boundaries with his patients. Everything seems to be working, until a storyteller stuck with writer’s block (played by local star Diego Peretti) arrives at his office.
Netflix also announced that El último gigante (The Last Giant), directed and written by Marcos Carnevale and produced by Leyenda Films and Kuarzo International Films. The film, starring Oscar Martínez (Wild Tales, Official Competition), and Matías Mayer (Iosi, the Regretful Spy), revolves around a charismatic tour guide named Boris, who unexpectedly reunites with his father Julián, who abandoned him 28 years ago. These new films add to Netflix’s previously-announced Parque Lezama, which started shooting in May, according to the platform’s press release. The film is written and directed by Juan José Campanella (who directed Oscar winner The Secret in Their Eyes) and features veteran stars Luis Brandoni and Eduardo Blanco. An adaptation of Campanella’s own hit play — which was based on I’m Not Rappaport by American playwright Herb Gardner — the film tells the story of the unlikely friendship between a long-time Communist Party militant and a lifelong believer in the “don’t interfere” attitude.
“Our commitment to Argentina is unwavering,” stated Francisco Ramos, Vice President of Content for Latin America, on the platform’s release. “We are passionate about being part of the audiovisual creation of this incredible country, promoting its cinema both domestically and internationally,” he added.
Netflix is also in post-production phase for a documentary film about one of the most infamous police cases in Argentina: a serial killer named “Yiya” Murano, a 50 year-old woman who poisoned three other women — including her cousin, and a neighbor — after scamming them large sums of money. The film is directed by Alejandro Hartmann (who directed Netflix’s The Menendez Brothers documentary) and produced by Haddock Films and Vanessa Ragone (also an Oscar winner for The Secret in Their Eyes).
