Football clubs across Argentina are organizing to help those affected by the Bahía Blanca floods, which have claimed at least 16 lives and forced 1,000 to evacuate.
On Saturday, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) released a statement on X announcing they would send aid for the people of Bahía Blanca, and encouraging clubs to organize solidarity campaigns.
“The [AFA] stands with the city of Bahía Blanca in this difficult moment and will send supplies, non-perishable food, personal hygiene items and mattresses over the next few hours,” it wrote. “We invite all Argentine Football clubs to collaborate with the cause!”
The Liga Profesional, the body in charge of organizing top-tier Argentine football, followed suit, asking clubs to help and suggesting that fans contact the nonprofit Red Solidaria to learn more about donations.
“Bahía Blanca needs us all, and football can’t and won’t stand by the sidelines,” it wrote.
One of the first clubs to jump into action was Independiente. On Sunday, El Rojo, as the club is affectionately known, released a video featuring star goalkeeper Rodrigo Rey telling fans the club would be collecting donations of non-perishable foods, clothing, hygiene products and more to help those affected.
According to the club, the show of support was “overwhelming,” forcing them to extend their donations deadline twice on Sunday, and then again on Monday.
“We still don’t know how much we’ve received so far,” a spokesperson for the club told the Herald.
“Fans went above and beyond what we expected, so we’re still sorting out donations.”
Other clubs quickly followed suit, including Argentine football giants Boca Juniors, River Plate and Racing Club. Teams from the provinces, like Belgrano in Córdoba and Newell’s Old Boys in Rosario, also launched donation campaigns.
