Over 100 people evacuated in Puerto Madero skyscraper fire

The cause of the fire, which set several floors of the 54-storey building ablaze, is unknown

One of Argentina’s tallest skyscrapers caught fire on Tuesday afternoon. According to the Buenos Aires City government, the fire started on the eleventh floor, and over 100 people had to be evacuated.

Residents were taken across the street to the Mujeres Argentinas square, where a total of 50 patients were examined, 12 were treated for smoke inhalation, and three were transferred to the Argerich Hospital. SAME registered 41 ambulances at the scene. Eight firefighting crews worked at the scene alongside volunteers.

“The fire extended all the way to the 15th floor,” said Alberto Crescenti, head of the Buenos Aires emergency services SAME, on the television channel TN. He asked passersby to stay away from the area because traffic was cut off.

In another interview with Radio Continental, he added that broken glass was falling from the windows. The emergency team transferred several people for hospitalization, “but none of them were at risk,” he added.

“Luckily, it was a very fast evacuation, meaning people are not at risk,” Crescenti said.

The tower, called Torre Renoir II, is located on Martha Lynch 551 in Puerto Madero, one of the wealthiest and most exclusive neighborhoods of Argentina. The 51-floor building is the second-highest building in the city, according to architecture studio McCormack Asociados’ website.

The cause of the fire is yet unknown, but the initial hypothesis points to an air conditioner unit malfunctioning.
