‘Dibu’ Martínez named Best Goalie for second time in three years

The Argentine national previously earned the honors after his World Cup triumph in 2022

Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez has more hardware to add to his collection.

For the second time in three years, FIFA has named the Aston Villa goalkeeper — and Argentine folk hero — Best Goalkeeper of 2024. The awards were announced in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday.

Other nominees included Ukrainian Andriy Lunin of Real Madrid, Brazilian Ederson of Manchester City, Italian Gianluiggi Donnarumma of Paris Saint-Germain, and French Mike Maignan of AC Milan, as well as Spaniards David Raya of Arsenal and Unai Simon of Athletic Club.

Martínez, a native of Mar del Plata, has had a year for the books, playing a key role in helping the Albiceleste capture its sixteenth Copa America tournament victory this season. Previously, he was honored with a Yashin Trophy—an award he also captured in 2023—by the French sports magazine, France Football.

“Once again, the best,” the Argentine National Team wrote in a post on X. “Emiliano Martínez is the emblem of the Argentine National Team and @AVFCO, and has once again been voted the best goalkeeper on the planet.”

“Animal!” the post added.

In September, the excitable keeper was hit with a two-game ban after posing with the Copa America trophy on his genitals following a 3-0 Argentina victory over Chile.

“I accept FIFA’s ban and apologize if I’ve offended anyone,” Martínez wrote on Instagram at the time. “Celebrations are a time for making kids smile, not for disrespecting anyone.”
