Exactly one week after his win in the United States presidential elections, Donald Trump spoke to Argentine President Javier Milei. The two had a telephone conversation in which the U.S. president-elect reportedly heaped praise on the libertarian economist.
“Donald Trump said to President Milei: ‘You are my favorite president. The end,’” Presidential Spokesperson Manuel Adorni wrote on Tuesday afternoon in a post on X.
This is the first confirmed contact between the leaders after Trump’s electoral win. Last week, multiple Argentine outlets reported that Milei had spoken briefly with Trump on the phone Wednesday evening to congratulate him personally. However, a government source told the Herald that there had been no such communication.
The same source also stated that Milei will travel on November 14 and 15 to the United States to meet with Trump before the latter’s inauguration on January 20. They added that they are still awaiting details from Trump staff to define the date and place of the meeting.
This would be the pair’s second meeting after they informally crossed paths and greeted each other backstage at the 2024 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in February. The pair hugged and praised each other, with Milei visibly moved. Trump has also mentioned the libertarian economist in some of his speeches this year, saying he is “a great gentleman.”
Last Wednesday, Milei had taken to social media to salute Trump on his “formidable electoral victory” against Democrat candidate Kamala Harris. The Argentine president offered his help so the Republican could carry out his “task.”
“Now, Make America Great Again,” Milei said in an X post published a few hours after Trump’s electoral win was confirmed. He added that Trump could “count on Argentina” and sent him “success and blessings.”
Milei also posted two AI-generated images of Trump hugging a humanoid lion — the animal he identifies with. “Make America great again. Long live freedom, dammit,” he wrote.
