Argentine basketball star Facundo Campazzo won the 2023-24 Spanish league Most Valuable Player award. The point guard, who plays for Real Madrid, became the fifth Argentine player to win the award, after other Albiceleste legends like Luis Scola and Andrés Nocioni.
Like the United States’s NBA award, the prize crowns the best player in the regular season. Coaches, players, fans and the press all get to vote on the winner. Campazzo got 71 votes, beating Unicaja Málaga’s Dylan Osetkowski with 66.6 and Lenovo Tenerife’s Gio Shermadini with 53.4. He was also selected for the Spanish league’s first ideal team, while another Argentine, Nicolás Brussino, was chosen for the second quintet.
Campazzo had previously won several individual accolades, including three Supercopa MVPs (2019, 2020 and 2023), a League Finals MVP (2019) and two Copa del Rey MVPs (2020 and 2024).
The 33-year-old Argentine has been one of the Merengue’s best performers. He’s averaging 11.4 points (37th overall) and 5.5 assists per game (fourth overall), helping his team to wins in the Spanish Supercopa and the Copa del Rey. Real Madrid are also en route to a Spanish league win and feature in the semifinals of the Euroliga, Europe’s premiere basketball competition.
This is Campazzo’s second stint at Real Madrid. He previously played with the Merengue team from 2014 to 2020, with a stint at UCAM Murcia from 2015 to 2017. After that, he played for NBA’s Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks, where he failed to establish himself despite taking part in the 2021 Rising Stars Challenge.
However, Campazzo won’t get to take his soaring form to the 2024 Paris Olympics, after Argentina lost at home in the 2023 Pre-Qualifying, falling 82-75 to Bahamas back in August 2023.
The Spanish league’s play-offs are already under way. Campazzo and Real Madrid opened with a 105-70 win against Gran Canaria, while the Euroliga final four is set to begin May 24, with the Merengue going up against Greece’s Olympiacos.
