Economy Minister Sergio Massa announced that the World Bank will support Argentina by investing in projects worth US$950 million. The announcement followed a meeting with the organization’s Managing Director for Operations, Anna Bjerde, in Washington DC.
Massa said that the World Bank reaffirmed its support to the country, “especially after the heavy impact of the drought.” He said that the projects are due in May and June.
One of those projects includes the government scholarship program, Progresar. With a World Bank disbursement of US$300 million, Massa and Education Minister Jaime Perczyk announced a 42% increase as of this month.
Perczyk and Massa had met in Washington with Cecilia Nahón, the executive director for Argentina and the Southern Cone of the World Bank Group.
“The agreement we have reached […] is key for the state to guarantee the entry, permanence, and graduation of students at all levels,” Massa said.
1.7 million students receive Progresar scholarships that will now be worth AR$12,780 a month.
Progresar is a nationwide government scholarship program to promote the completion of compulsory education (from age four until graduating high school). It also encourages higher education and vocational training courses for people aged 18 to 24. In December 2021, the program was expanded to include students aged 16 and 17.
