Pilots from Aerolíneas Argentinas have announced they plan to strike on June 10. Travel to and from Argentina is likely to be disrupted during the planned stoppages.
The strike is set to take place on Tuesday, June 10, starting at 6 p.m. and ending at 2 a.m. the following day. This will affect operations at both Aeroparque Jorge Newbery and Ezeiza airports.
A representative from Airline Pilots Association (APLA, by its Spanish initials) told the Herald, “We’re raising this dispute primarily over salary guidelines, breaches of contractual obligations, and a few other issues.”
In a new communique sent to the Herald, Aerolíneas Argentinas claimed APLA’s planned manifestation will affect thousands of passengers, with a hefty cost to the company.
“Aerolíneas Argentinas announces it will cancel 22 flights and reschedule another 28 between 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday the 10th and 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday the 11th,” the statement read. “This measure will affect the travel plans of more than 6,000 passengers with flights scheduled during that time slot. The company will face an estimated loss of $1.1 million in direct and indirect damages resulting from this action.”
Earlier in May, for the first time since its renationalization in 2008, Aerolíneas Argentinas announced it would not require funding from the national government throughout 2025. They had accumulated US$8 billion in government subsidies over the past 16 years to cover its annual operating loss of around US$400 million.
After taking office in 2023, the Javier Milei administration moved towards privatizing Aerolíneas. The airline cut around 15% of its staff, including 85 senior managers, reducing its overall workforce by 1,600 people.
