Diplomatic respite as Spain appoints ambassador to Argentina

The move comes after months of the post being empty due to tensions between Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and President Javier Milei

After months of diplomatic rows between the countries’ leaders, Spain has appointed a new ambassador to Argentina in an apparent bid to resume the historically close bilateral alliance.

“Spain and Argentina are brethren countries united by deep human and social ties. Our common language and culture, as well as significant economic, commercial, and investment ties, must always be the guiding principle in our bilateral relations,” read a joint communiqué from both countries.

Sparks began flying back and forth when Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente suggested Milei was a drug user in May. Weeks later, Milei gave a speech at an event in Madrid organized by the far-right Spanish political party, Vox. He did not meet with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in what was deemed a diplomatic snub.

Without naming her, Milei called the Spanish First Lady Begoña Gómez “corrupt” during his speech, because of accusations that she had been involved in an influence-peddling scandal. Spanish prosecutors dropped the investigation into her because there was no proof of her involvement.

The president’s comments sparked an unprecedented diplomatic row between the two historically close allies. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares announced the withdrawal of the country’s ambassador to Argentina days later.

“Our ambassador wasn’t removed and had no issues there [in Spain]. The negotiation sounds politically difficult because of our respective leaders, but the professional work I’ve been doing has worked,” said Foreign Minister Diana Mondino in a LN+ interview on Tuesday.

Ambassador Joaquín María de Arístegui Laborde is currently serving in Colombia, although his X profile includes an Argentine flag between brackets to presumably show his future posting.
