Biden and Fernández to hold bilateral meeting

The U.S. President had to cancel a planned meeting with his Argentine counterpart last July after testing positive for COVID-19

US President Joe Biden and Argentine President Alberto Fernández will meet next week after a planned bilateral meeting in 2022 was postponed, official sources have confirmed to the Herald.

Further details of the meeting are expected tomorrow, sources with knowledge of the matter said.

Last July, Biden tested positive for COVID-19 before a bilateral meeting with Fernández, canceling their plans. Argentina’s Foreign Ministry has been attempting to reschedule the meeting since then.

This morning, Argentine Ambassador to the US, Jorge Argüello, met with Juan González, Biden’s Special Assistant and the White House’s Director of the National Security Council. “Our relations are being strengthened,” he tweeted.

Last week, Economy Minister Sergio Massa met with Christopher Dodd, President Biden’s special advisor for Latin America, and Brazil’s Planning Minister Simone Nassar Tebet at the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) 63rd Annual Meeting in Panama.

During their meeting, Dodd and Massa discussed the global financial landscape and the complexities of raising interest rates for their countries’ economies. Both officials highlighted that it is important to consider Latin America’s vulnerabilities in the global financial economy.

After his encounter with Dodd, Massa tweeted about the importance of “joint work to address the regional situation”.
