Australian Open 2024: Etcheverry and Báez are out

Defeats to Djokovic and Sinner mean no Argentines remain in either singles draw

It’s game, set and match for Argentines in the 2024 Australian Open. The first Grand Slam of the season has no remaining Albiceleste representatives in the singles draws after Tomás Etcheverry and Sebastián Báez were eliminated from the tournament.

Etcheverry (32nd ATP men’s singles ranked) fell 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) to current world number one, Serbian Novak Djokovic, in two hours and 29 minutes of play. The 24-year-old had made waves in the first round after beating three-time British Grand Slam-winner Andy Murray, but was unable to stop Djokovic, who’s undefeated in 31 consecutive matches at the Australian Open.

“Tomás is a very nice guy,” said the world number one after the match. “We get along well, I really like him, his team and his family. It’s fantastic for Argentine tennis that he’s doing better and better, improving and building up his game and I’m sure we’re going to see a lot of him on the big stage in the future.”

Báez (29th) fell to Italian Jannik Sinner (4)  6-0, 6-1, 6-3 in under two hours, meaning there will be no Argentines in the round of 16 in either singles draw. Nadia Podoroska, the sole Argentine in the women’s singles draw, had lost 6-2, 6-3 to American Amanda Anisimova (442) in the second round.

The Albiceleste hopes now rest in the doubles draw with Horacio Zeballos (7th ATP men’s doubles ranked) who is in the second round, partnering with Spaniard Marcel Granollers, while the Argentine duo of Máximo González and Andrés Molteni (tied 13th doubles rankings) are into the third round.
