    Mitre train derailment in Retiro injures 31

    Syrian PM joins rebels

    Syria’s prime minister defected yesterday, evidence that the widening cracks in President Bashar al-Assad’s regime have reached the highest echelons of government. Riad Hijab is the highest-level political figure to switch sides and is certain to encourage rebels after a string of military and diplomatic figures abandoned the regime. A Jordanian official and a rebel spokesman said he fled to Jordan. Other sources said he could be headed to Qatar.

    Islamist gunmen killed at least 15 Egyptian policemen yesterday and seized an army tank in an attack on a Sinai police station near the frontier with Israel, and Israeli aircraft destroyed a vehicle used by the gunmen to try to storm the fortified border.

     A gunman opened fire yesterday and killed six people at a Sikh temple near Milwaukee before he was killed in an exchange of gunfire with one of the first officers to respond to the chaotic scene, authorities said.

    Yet another diplomatic missile against Uruguay

    Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman added fuel to the fire caused by the controversy over dredging the Martín García channel when he sent a letter to his Uruguayan counterpart Luis Almagro over the weekend in which he claimed that the UPM pulp plant, formerly owned by Botnia, produces more pulp than is permitted by the International Court (IC) in The Hague.
