Great Britain accused Argentina yesterday of “harrassing” residents of the Malvinas Islands following the government’s announcement that legal action will be taken against any companies involved in oil exploration off the disputed archipelago in the South Atlantic region. Tensions between the two countries have escalated in recent months as the 30th anniversary of the 1982 war over the islands approaches next month. Oil reserves located off the Malvinas, which analysts speculate could possibly rake in US$167 billion in taxes and royalties, have only heightened the conflict and led to more heated dialogue.
