In brief

Hebe de Bonafini indicted

Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo President Hebe De Bonafini, and her former accountant Sergio Schocklender, were indicted for alleged fraud in a the Sueños Compartidos social housing programme last monday. Prosecutors alleged that an estimated US$13 million dollars were misappropriated from funds intended for building houses, schools and medical centres. Bonafini immediately denied the accusations, claiming that President Mauricio Macri and the judiciary were making up a case against her. “For calling (Macri) the enemy, for denouncing those that participated in the dictatorship with their companies — we know the price of freedom, and it is a price we are willing to pay,” said Bonafini in a video that was released as soon as the indictment was made known. The mothers of the Plaza de Mayo split into two groups in the 1980s over differences, the one led by Bonafini is the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo and the other is Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (Founders line). Last August, Judge Marcelo Martinez de Giorgi had issued an arrest warrant against Bonafini after she refused to appear in court to testify over the same case. The warrant was later dismissed when Bonafini agreed to meet with the Judge in the kitchen of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo’s headquarters.

DETAILS OF CFK-Odebrecht meetings requested

Federal Judge Sebastián Casanello has requested the details of any meetings between former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and other government officials and Odebrecht representatives between 2011 and 2014. The request, which includes meetings held in the Casa Rosada, the official residence at Olivos, the Economy Ministry and Production Ministry, has been sent to Cabinet Chief Marcos Peña. The judge is looking for documents or footage of any meetings.

Casanello is in charge of an investigation into irregularities at the Paraná de las Palmas water treatment plant adjudicated to Odebrecht. Prosecutor Federico Delgado this week submitted footage of a meeting between Fernández de Kirchner and Marcelo Odebrecht, who is now serving time in prison for graft.
