Masticar in numbers

Working our way through the tasty dishes on offer at Buenos Aires’ famed foodfest

I don’t know about you but I tried my best to work my way through the 150 dishes on offer at Feria Masticar 2017 last weekend. The weather just about held it together over the four-day food fest, and Saturday shone through in terms of dry sunny spells and good vibes.

From book-signings to cooking-classes for kiddies, demonstrations from the likes of Pablo Massey and Germán Martitegui, a splendid produce market selling fruit, veg, nuts jam and hams, cheese and all kinds of goodies sourced from around the country at extremely reasonable prices (those Pink Lady apples from Río Negro!) and enough celebrity chefs to shake a wooden spoon at, Masticar 6.0 came, saw and conquered.

Bigger than ever with an extra 6,000 square metres, regardless, it still might not have been large enough to sate the appetites of 150,000 hungry porteños who queued 11 hours a day, keen to sample ceviche a las brasas, goat kid soup, llama milanesa sandwiches, black pudding and blue cheese pizza a la parrilla, seafood churros, oysters, slow-cooked rabbit, choripán, tacos and arepas. Forty food stands and trucks worked their arses off to feed everyone — but the truth is, the lines were crazy.

Food for thought: the previous three editions have all taken place in autumn so what are the chances of a double 2017 whammy and staging another Masticar in spring, upping the number of days to five and food stands to 50?

Buenos Aires is clearly hungry plus it’s the IberoAmerican Cultural Gastronomy City 2017 — so let’s give this ever-growing foodie population what they want.
