Newell’s need a win to restart title push

San Lorenzo soar up table to lead the chasing pack

Boca is not the only team that will be out to put clásico blues behind it as, after a weekend of neighbourly tensions, the Primera División resumes normal service.

Newell’s Old Boys suffered an identical humiliation in their defeat to Rosario Central on Sunday, and after two defeats in a row needs a win to keep its faltering title ambitions alive. The Lepra is still just four points behind the leader, and if it can take advantage of another injury to Boca lynchpin Ricardo Centurión and produce the goods at the Bombonera, the league is open to anyone.

Alongside River, San Lorenzo was another of the derby weekend’s big winners. Diego Aguirre’s men dispatched Huracán to move within one win of the top and can briefly pull level with Boca with a win over Aldosivi in Bajo Flores.

River, meanwhile, are on the road again, this week travelling to La Plata for Monday’s encounter with Gimnasia. The Lobo was another of the vanquished and its loss to Estudiantes reignited the latter’s own title pretensions, with three points on Monday away to Olimpo a must if it is to stay in touch with the leading pack.

The Clásico de Avellaneda was another of the big games, with Independiente’s victory over Racing meaning they join the tussle for a place in next season’s Copa Libertadores. Fresh from its first home win of the year, the Rojo can move even closer to the competition if it can down Huracán on Saturday — and with 10 goals in its last four outings Ariel Holan’s charges have shown signs that they are finally getting to grips with the coach’s dynamic style.

Racing’s loss has by no means ended its chances of making the cut, although it will need a big result away to Central on Sunday to banish memories of a disappointing evening in the Libertadores de América and put its campaign back on track.

The euphoria or pain of the clásicos continues for the fans, but on the pitch those involved have to put those games behind them and focus on another key weekend in a Primera División that is fast coming to a close.
