Rivals for women in World League

By Eric Weil / For The Herald

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has announced the competitors for the national women’s World League to be played in Johannesburg, South Africa from July 8-23.

In Group B, Argentina will meet South Africa on July 12, USA on July 14 and India on July 16. This is not an easy group.

The top two will then play the top two from Group A in the semi-finals. All four will qualify for the finals and the next World Cup.

Miguel Grasso has been elected president of the Argentine Hockey Federation (CAH) and he immediately dispelled the rumour that Gabriel Minadeo would be replaced by Agustín Corradi as the national women’s team coach. Corradi was coach of the successful under-21 group.

Meanwhile, men’s coach Carlos Retegui, under whom Argentina won last year’s Olympic Games, said a few days prior that he was not sure he would continue in the post, probably in view of the rumours concerning changes. But now he says the only thing we need is to be world champions next year, which so far we are not.

In spite of the rain, six men’s First Division A matches, which had been previously suspended, were played.

The results were San Fernando 2 Hurling 2, San Martin 1 Santa Barbara 2, Quilmes A 4 Quilmes B 1, Ciudad de Buenos Aires B 1 Ducilo 4, Bartolomé Mitre 4 Universidad La Plata 2.

This leaves Hurling at the top of the table with 16 points, but Ciudad BA’s A team, four points behind, did not face off against lowly Quilmes High School.
