Tierra del Fuego suffers biggest drop in employment
Tierra del Fuego was the province that suffered the most from job losses in 2016. This occurred after import controls and tariffs were lifted that protected companies based in the province that assembled electronic products. The companies were forced to close and fire employees in part due to this policy, leading to a drop of almost 13 percent (12.8 percent) in private employment, according to the INDEC state statistics agency. Tierra del Fuego was followed by Santa Cruz, which witnessed a decrease of 9.9 percent, and then San Luis province with 7.3 percent.
