Pederast priest’s sentence reduced

Father Julio Grassi’s 15-year prison sentence for sexually abusing minors cut by 2 years

Morón’s oral court No.1 reduced pederast priest Julio César Grassi’s 15-year prison sentence for sexually abusing minors by two years last Monday, after ruling that he would receive the “two for one” benefit one week after the Supreme Court confirmed his sentence. This means Grassi has nine years and four months until he will be released from jail. The plaintiff’s lawyer, Juan Pablo Gallego, complained against the ruling, considering it to be “absolutely illegal.”

The Morón court ruled in favour of reducing Grassi’s sentence basing it on Law 24.390, which was repealed in May, 2001, that establishes a double counting rule for those who have been in prison for more than two years without a prison sentence.

Grassi was remanded in custody from October 23 until November 21, and later held under house arrest from March 7, 2010 until May 31, and finally held under arrest permanently beginning September 23, 2013 up to now. According to the new calculations after the last ruling, the pederast priest will now be released from prison on August 10, 2026, with his sentence being reduced by one year, nine months and 20 days.

The plaintiff’s attorney criticised the ruling, stating its is “an enormous judicial error, because the double counting law was before the sentence was fulfilled.” Gallego said that Grassi should only be benefited with the time he served in the Campana penitentiary complex before the double counting ruling was finally repealed by the Supreme Court: This means from September 9, 2013 until last March 21, 2014. “The judges had all the information necessary not to make a mistake. It’s surprising that they play this way with such a public case, maybe, they thought that it wouldn’t be a big deal because it was a few years less ... this is happening in a context where the church hasn’t sanctioned nor removed Grassi,” concluded Gallego.
